James Spencer wrote Beyond Mormonism to give an inside look to what happens in Mormonism and how they recruit new converts. He’s also got a great website for more information into mormonism. There are details into their secret rites and to the general happenings when they get together. It’s of interest to me because of my sister’s recent choice to become mormon. She got married last summer so that she could go to the highest levels of heaven and, someday, populate a whole planet when her husband becomes a god. Yep, and they think Jesus and Satan are brothers. Seriously?!?
Learning the history of mormonism, it’s really surprising that anyone actually chooses to join. With their doctrine of perfect obedience, they cannot even ask questions about new revelations that come to the current prophet (which is really a heretical version of the pope). Their prophets receive revelations according to what makes their religion more socially acceptable to current times and the people just have to live with the whims that are claimed to be from heaven. This kind of church government is called a dictatorship and can only be stopped with a violnet coup, which is historically accurate for mormonism.
In our area, mormonism is growing and growing. It’s sad to watch people fall into this trap and become so entangled in a web of heretical doctrines and policies that they lose hope. Especially with new archaelogical evidence and DNA mapping disproving many of their beliefs. This group maintains itself with the brainwashing effects of cultic practices and intimidating leadership.
